Explore how students co-designed a video using AI with Swiss National Railways, showcasing innovative approaches to creative collaboration and generative AI in design education.
Abstract
This project article details the 2025 multidisciplinary workshop undertaken in collaboration with the Department of Construction and Design at SUPSI, Switzerland, and Swiss National Railways (SBB CFF FFS). Developed by Matteo Subet and Antonella Autuori as part of the DesigningWithAI initiative, the workshop focused on a single, ambitious audio-visual project: creating a video for the new FFS factory in Arbedo-Castione. The core innovation lay in the complete integration of generative AI tools throughout the production process, offering valuable insights into collaborative design practices within an increasingly AI-driven landscape.
Concept
The workshop’s central concept revolved around co-designing with artificial intelligence. Rather than viewing AI as a mere tool for automation, we explored its potential to act as a creative partner in the design process. The project aimed to demonstrate how generative AI platforms, such as Midjourney and RunwayML, can be leveraged by multidisciplinary teams to conceptualise, develop, and produce complex media projects. This approach acknowledges the evolving role of designers and their relationship with intelligent systems.
Process Development
The workshop involved students from diverse disciplines within the department, who were organised into groups responsible for specific phases of a video documenting the train wheel maintenance process. Each group utilised generative AI tools to create visual elements and explore different narrative approaches. This iterative workflow allowed for experimentation and adaptation, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges inherent in integrating AI into creative workflows. The collaboration with SBB CFF FFS provided invaluable real-world context and access to subject matter expertise, ensuring the project’s relevance and authenticity.
