Abstract

This research project, titled ‘Designing With’, addresses the evolving landscape of design education by developing a novel educational module. The aim is to seamlessly integrate artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and data visualisation (DV) techniques into diverse design curricula. This initiative seeks to equip future designers with the skills necessary to navigate an increasingly technology-driven world. Concept

The core concept underpinning ‘Designing With’ revolves around bridging the gap between traditional design principles and emerging computational tools. We recognise that AI, ML, and DV are no longer niche technologies but fundamental components of contemporary design practice. This module provides a framework for educators to introduce these concepts in a practical and accessible manner, fostering innovation and critical thinking amongst students.

Process Development

The project is a collaborative effort between the Institute of Design at SUPSI, the Media x Design Lab at EPFL, and Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Through this partnership, we are generating valuable knowledge and pedagogical guidelines which will be made freely available to the design community. This open-access approach encourages widespread adoption and facilitates the independent implementation of AI-focused teaching activities. The project was financially supported by Movetia from September 2022 to February 2024, an organisation dedicated to promoting international exchange and cooperation in education.
