Concept

Users interact with the device by inserting a disc equipped with an integrated NFC tag. The smartphone inside the product reads the NFC tag information and accesses the pre-loaded playlist. Music starts playing, and users can navigate the playlist using three physical buttons: back, play/pause, and forward. The device requires an NFC-compatible smartphone and a disc with an integrated NFC tag.

Process Development

The design process began with modeling all components in Fusion 360. Next, we worked on the mechanism, conducting numerous tests to achieve optimal linear movement. After developing a functional mechanism, we focused on the object’s design, creating components using 3D printing, PMMA, and wood. Special attention was given to the three physical buttons controlling the smartphone. These buttons were 3D printed using a special conductive filament, enabling touchscreen interaction through a physical object.

Note

The project was developed during the Digital Fabrication course of the Master of Arts in Interaction Design at SUPSI together with my collegue Giuseppe Piazza. The project is a re-production of the Sony Sony PS-F9, we modified the technology to let the system work by using just a phone and a NFC tag.
